About Us

We are a Chamber Choir based in Newport, Shropshire, where we were founded in 1988 by Keith Orrell. Our name originates from the choir's first rehearsal venue, Beaumaris House. We now rehearse at Cosy Hall (6 Water Lane, Newport TF10 7LD) in school term times on Tuesday nights at 7:30pm.

Numbering around 25 voices,  we sing a wide variety of repertoire spanning five centuries, both a capella and accompanied. Recent performances have included Duruflé's Requiem, Haydn's Missa Brevis and Fauré's Requiem, but we are equally at home with lighter material - our highly successful Summer 2025 concert had, as its centrepiece, Chilcott's A Little Jazz Mass. As well as our termly concerts, the choir can sometimes be found singing at community events, care homes, weddings and funerals. If you are interested in booking us to perform at an event, please enquire with our Secretary as the first port of call.

Led by our Musical Director Jack Brookes, who has directed the choir since March 2020 (what a time to start!), and our Accompanist, Evy King, we are always on the look-out for talented singers to join us - particularly tenors and basses, who are always in short supply, but we welcome enquiries from all voice parts. 

Members do need to be able to read music to a reasonable standard (though we may make exceptions for tenors and basses who are willing to 'learn on the job') and there is a short private audition with Jack to check that any new voices will fit nicely into the choir. However, this is very straight-forward and no advance preparation is required.  

Interested in joining us? You are welcome to attend three rehearsals at no charge, to see how you like us and decide whether you would like to audition to join as a member. Just let our Membership Secretary know in advance that you are coming so we can put a chair out for you! Another option is to come along to one of Jack's Singing Workshops - these are held annually in September, and would give you a chance to experience singing with the choir in a fun, no-pressure environment.
