The Choir The Beaumaris Singers, based in Newport, (near Telford) Shropshire, is a chamber choir of around 25 voices, which has performed in Italy, France, Holland and Germany. The choir was founded in 1988 by Keith Orrell, who directed it until 2004.
Our new Musical Director is Mitchell (Mitch) Holland, who is very enthusiastic and we look forward to working with him.
The choir sings both a cappella music and major works with orchestra from an extensive repertoire spanning five centuries. A critically acclaimed performance of Bach's St Matthew Passion in 2000 was followed in 2001 by an equally well-received Monteverdi Vespers. Recent performances include Bernstein's Chichester Psalms, Vaughan-Williams' Mass in G Minor, and Bach's Christmas Oratorio. The choir is equally at home with lighter repertoire, providing entertainment at social and charity events and music for weddings.
Beaumaris Singers was Choir of the Day in three successive Sainsbury Choir of the Year competitions and also BBC Radio Shropshire Choir of the Year. It has issued two CDs: Tracks in the Snow (Christmas music recorded with the Jackfield Elcock Reisen Band) and Of Birds and Bees (a selection of a cappella pieces). In 2005 it was invited to form the semichorus for the West Midlands Making Music Northwest performance of Elgar's Dream of Gerontius in Symphony Hall, Birmingham. The choir has broadcast on radio on three occasions, and has performed with Russell Watson in Manchester and Birmingham.
Rehearsals: The choir rehearses on Tuesday evenings during school terms, at Cosy Hall, Newport, Shropshire.
